Backing-up is imperative! Not just locally but off site hosting as well!
I have just re-launched the Old Moat Community Primary School website August/September 2010. I have integrated the superior WordPress v3 into the site due to the schools high needs to use blogging facilities and constant picture updates.
My title of “Backing-up” relates to my new website launch entirely! Recently I discovered that my colleague in web design didn’t renew one of our ASP Server hosting. In a nut shell, it didn’t appear to have any clients hosted on it. So all seemed pretty straight forward, that the cancelation could go through.
Next, we get a call from Old Moat Primary, explaining to us that their website seems to be offline. Remotely, I checked it straight away. It seemed strange that it had gone done so I tracked back the DNS records of the domain to find that it was being directed to another server, instead of our Unix based one. So that lead us to the conclusion that the ASP Server we closed down actually hosted the Old Moat Website.
Not to worry! Due to me doing incremental backups, part of the Each Web Solutions hosting plan. I was able to retrieve the full site in it’s entirety.
After reviewing this with management of the school the decided that they wanted a new layout and CMS implementing. I went ahead and did this, choosing WordPress v3. This was my choice because due to the schools needs this was the best solution.
The default dynamic CMS I provide is great for the schools needs, however, WordPress v3 with the correct plug-ins, I feel reaches out to the students and staff and enables them to modify content themselves with greater facilities. So overall with the revamp of the site, this seemed like the best solution to us.
Getting back to the point, the main aim of this article is to preach to you and get you to make sure all your corners are covered!
All as it takes is a simple dial into FTP and download your websites at least once ever month to make sure you are fully backed up and ready for the worst.

It’s now Wednesday 11th August, where has the year gone at all?!
I’m currently on holiday sat on the beach looking out into the Greek Mediterranean Sea. Absolutely beautiful!
I brought my Digital SLR along with me to try and capture culture and architecture in Greece. As Skiathos town is only a twenty minute water taxi trip from my accommodation, I have been to visit it a few times now to see what I can shoot.
As I made my way up to the famous clock tower at the peek of the island, I captured some fantastic panoramic shots of the roof tops of the historic inhabited buildings of Skiathos.
As I travelled around, i noticed so much ageing culture which was a delight to shoot, doorways, old buildings, ageing architecture and the people.
This blog’s main intention is to reach out and tell you fellow photographers to have the confidence when you go out shooting. When you see something you think will later mean something to you, capture it. Put aside any thoughts on what other people are thinking, shoot what you think needs capturing.
As I was walking trough the unorganised town plan of Skiathos, which is buzzing with classic architecture and beauty, I noticed this elderly woman sat by her house and I walked past as some younger lads were there and thought I really wanted to take her picture because she looked so iconic to the area. I didn’t and walked away, after sitting down a little further away from where the woman was, I thought to myself how much I would regret not having that photo in my collection of my journey to Greece. So I walked back to the location and luckily she was still there. I approached her, surely knowing she didn’t speak a word of English and pointed at my camera and then at her, she smiled at me and then nodded. I took one shot and checked it out in my viewfinder and instantly knew that was the shot of my collection. I thanked her, she blew me a kiss and off I went.
Never be afraid of approaching people and asking them directly, the worst that can happen is that you would get denied, but take it on the chin and move on (its not like you will ever see them again).
I will be uploading the images of my journey late August, so keep an eye on my photography section here for any updates.
I added a photography section to my site a while back but did not keep it as up-to-date as I wanted so I have made a few little changes to it.
I have recently integrated this section to my CMS so i can easily add new project links to my site and keep my work present. If you visit the page you will be able to see the projects building up over the next few weeks. If you see a project that you wish to view, you are now able to highlight over the chosen album and get further information on it. As well as doing this you are able to
